What is a fen?
Fens are among the rarest of wetland communities.
Wetlands are the vital link between water and land. The
Klein Fen is an especially unique fen known as a hanging
fen. There are only 19.2 acres of these fens in Illinois.
The Klein Fen is 5.2 acres. Fens were formed 18,000
years ago by glaciers and are irreplaceable.

The Friends of Klein Fen continue to educate the
community about the importance of protecting
watersheds and the impact they have on our water
supply. Watershed = The land that water flows over and
through on its way to a stream, river or lake. Water is
cleansed as it travels overland through vegetation and
wetlands before entering streams and lakes. Wetlands
also provide storage during times of high rainfall,
preventing flooding. Illinois has lost 90% of its original
wetlands. The 200 acre property on Klein Rd. contains
wetlands which feed the Klein Fen and is part of the
DuPage River watershed. Preserving this land is
important to the future of the Klein Fen and keeping the
DuPage River healthy.

Storm water run off is one of the leading causes of surface water pollution in DuPage County. Storm Drain
Stenciling is a visual aid to show that whatever is put into a storm drain goes directly to a nearby waterway.
Volunteers will be stenciling storm drains in neighborhoods where discharge flows through the Klein fen and
into the DuPage River.
